The Magician
In IIB’s parking lot.
A car from the Correctional Services arrives in the parking. An officer, the officer Dewhurst, opens the door to let a prisoner, Magnus, get out of the car.
Officer Dewhurst : Now we’re not going to have a problem, are we?
Magnus : Thank the driver for me, he was easy on the bumps.
Officer Dewhurst : Yeah, yeah.
Magnus : What time is it?
Officer Dewhurst : 8:55. Let’s go.
At IIB’s QG.
Dev : Three inch concrete bolt and an eye hook big enough to secure an elephant? Are you sure this isn’t overkill?
Officer Dewhurst : I’m Officer Dewhurst, Correctional Services.
Michelle : We’re ready.
Officer Dewhurst : Court’s order says you’ve got him for 9 hours and not a minute more. We take him to Don Jail tonight and he’s back in the Pen tomorrow morning. That won’t be soon enough.
Michelle : (Showing him the interrogation room) In there.
Officer Dewhurst : I don’t think you know who we’re dealing with here, Sergeant.
Magnus : Oh, it’s Sergeant now, is it? I should have worn a tie.
In Toby and Oz’s ambulance.
Oz : Hey Toby, come on man, stay with me. It’s our last call.
Toby : I’ve got a headache, man.
Oz : Can you keep your eyes open at least?
Toby : Why?
Oz : I can’t drive if your eyes are closed.
Toby : Makes no sense, Oz.
Oz : If you are sleeping it’s going to make me want to sleep.
Toby : I’m not sleeping.
Oz : How do I know that?
Toby : We’re having a conversation.
Oz : Yeah, it doesn’t surprise me. Between your shifts and IIB, you’ve been burning the candle at both ends. You know you need a jolt. See that thermos down there? Can you grab it? Go ahead.
Toby : What is this?
Oz : It’s my mother’s recipe, it’s chow gong. It’s turnip juice, it’s fantastic. You’ll love it. Take a sip.
Toby : (Taking a sip) Huh!
Oz : Told you.
Toby : Bah!
Oz : Good stuff.
Toby : My tongue is on fire.
Oz : Yeah, she’s still tweaking the recipe.
Toby : Yeah, with Cayenne pepper?
Oz : Listen, you drink that whole thing and you will have a spring in your step and a sparkle in your eye.
Toby : Wow, that woke me up.
Oz : Turnip, right?
Toby : Yeah.
In the street.
Toby and Oz arrive with their hand-barrow in the accident place where a young man, Aaron and his girlfriend are waiting.
Toby : Hey, chest pains?
Aaron : Yeah.
Toby : Alright. What’s her name?
Aaron : Justine.
Toby : How you doing? I’m Toby. Justine, can you sit up? Ah, you have trouble breathing?
Justine : No.
Toby : Uh, where’s your pain?
Justine : It’s like a knife right here.
Toby : In your chest?
Justine : Yeah.
Toby : Anywhere else, your arms, your head?
Justine : No, just here.
Oz : BP 110 palpate, pulse is high but steady.
Toby : How long ago did you get the pain?
Aaron : 20 minutes ago.
Justine : Right after I drank the milkshake. Am I having a heart attack?
Oz : You’re not having a heart attack.
Aaron : Can you help her?
Aaron’s thoughts.
Aaron is putting his engagement ring into Justine’s milkshake to propose her.
Toby : Hey, she didn’t swallow anything she wasn’t supposed to, did she?
Aaron : Yeah.
Toby : Alright, it will be alright. Hey Oz, let’s call it in.
Oz : Yeah.
Toby : Can you stand?
Oz : Can you walk? We’re going to walk you over the rig.
Toby : She swallowed a ring.
Oz : A ring?
Toby : What’s your name?
Aaron : Aaron.
Toby : Toby, we’ll take care of you guys.

In IIB’s surveillance room.
Dev : The Maribel Heist, the Canaccord job, the Bank of Canada? Magnus was behind all of them?
Michelle : All unresolved, different MO’s, left no clues and the money was never recovered.
Dev : $50, 000, 000 over his career?
Alvin : Estimated, there’s no real way of knowing.
Dev : Magnus, just the name screams super criminal genius guy.
Alvin : Prison Psych team tested his IQ. Je scored off the charts apparently.
Dev : Still, someone managed to catch the braniac.
Toby : Yeah, I did.
Dev : You knew that?
Alvin : Yeah, yeah. She doesn’t like to talk about it.
In IIB’s interrogation room.
Magnus : Think we could loosen these? For my circulation.
Michelle : Let’s skip the coy games.
Magnus : Sergeant, not bad for someone your age. Don’t say I didn’t have anything to do with it. Least thing you could do is tolerate my coy games.
Michelle : You said you wanted to save someone’s life. That time was of the essence and that you would only talk to me, so talk.
Magnus : What time is it?
Michelle : It’s 9:35.
Magnus : Then you still have one hour.
Michelle : Until what?
Magnus : For 18 days I shared a cell with one Randy Coruthers. He was a chatty sort, told me all sorts of things including what he was going to do when he got out. He was released 6 days ago.
Michelle : And what’s he going to do when he gets out?
Magnus : He’s going to kidnap and kill Superior Court Judge Brent Wilcott.
At Dev’s desk.
Dev : I pulled this up, Randy Coruthers. He grew up in Nova Scotia. He ran away when he was 16. No friends, no known associates, he served 18 months for burglary. He was released 6 days ago with $50 and a bus ticket. I can actually pull up the court records.
Michelle : No, we have to get down to the court house.
At the Superior Court House.
Michelle and Dev enter in a court where there is a judge, Judge Sonnenfeld.
Michelle : Judge Wilcott? Sergeant McCluskey, IIB, do you have a minute?
Judge Sonnenfeld : Sonnenfeld, Wilcott is in his Chambers in there. If you’ll excuse me, I’m late for an appointment.
Michelle knocks on Judge Wilcott’s door.
Michelle : Sergeant McCluskey, IIB. Can we have a word your honor?
Judge Wilcott : Has anyone contacted my wife?
Michelle : We have officers outside your house sir, she’s fine. Does the name Coruthers mean anything to you?
Judge Wilcott : Nothing comes to mind.
Dev : Do you mind if I check the court database? Here, this is the man, he was recently paroled.
Judge Wilcott : He wouldn’t be after me.
Michelle : Two years in Kingston is enough time to build up some resentment.
Judge Wilcott : Only I didn’t trial his case.
Dev : Yeah, it was Judge Sonnenfeld.
In the Superior Court House’s parking lot.
Judge Sonnenfeld arrives where his car is parked to find a van in front of his car. He knocks on the van’s back doors.
Judge Sonnenfeld : Come on, half the lot’s empty, do you have to do this there? You’re blocking my car.
A man hooded and armed opens the door and throws the judge in the van before the car leaves the parking.

Oz : You’ve been proposed to before, right?
Sandy : Never.
Oz : But you were married.
Sandy : I did the proposing. I know, sad. Should have been my first clue.
Oz : Yeah, but I mean, there have been other proposals, right?
Sandy : Nope. A few kicked tires but.
Oz : Come on, a lovely lady like yourself? You must have had hundreds of guys.
Sandy : What is that supposed to mean?
Oz : No, not that you’ve had hundreds of guys, I mean, just there’s probably been three guys. You know, little cue… I’m going to shush.
Sandy : That’s a good idea.
Oz : Yeah.
Toby : Hey! You got everything covered?
Oz : Yeah, inventory paperwork writing letters to myself, yeah, pretty much everything.
Toby : (Showing him the thermos) Thank you.
Oz : Right?
Toby : Yeah. My tongue is numb but my headache is gone. Thank you.
Oz : I’ll make you another batch.
Toby’s phone rings.
Toby : (To Oz) My favorite cop.
Michelle is in the Superior Court House’s parking lot.
Michelle : Hey, any chance you can meet me at IIB?
Toby : Yeah, what is it?
Michelle : A kidnapped Judge and a man that is incapable of telling the truth.
Toby : Give me an hour.
Michelle : Okay.
In the Superior Court House.
In the Superior Court House’s parking lot.
Dev : We’ve got a fresh imprint of the oil stains. Clear tread pattern, it’s a truck or a van. His wallet and court case still inside the briefcase, car keys on the ground. Quick snatch and grab.
Michelle : What about the surveillance cameras?
Dev : Sprayed with red paint, same with the others, all the way down.
Michelle : Ok, find the tapes and roll back before they were blacked out and get me the car that came in.
Dev : How did the genius get this wrong?
Michelle : Magnus is only wrong when he wants to be.
At St Luke’s hospital.
Oz : Then, what were you going to say to her?
Aaron : I don’t know what to say to her.
Oz : You didn’t have anything planned?
Aaron : Ah, she was going to find the ring in the milkshake and I was going to say, let’s get hitched.
Oz : Hitched? Tractor trailers get hitched. You have to be romantic. Ok, look I’m you, right? Life without you is not worth living, love without you is no love at all. Sandy, X-ray?
Sandy : Yep.
Oz : This is a picture of your heart and this is a symbol of mine. Will you marry me?
Aaron : Ah, that’s good.
Oz : Yeah, yeah, go get her, tiger.
Aaron : Thanks bro.
Oz : Yeah, get in there.
Sandy arrives and put into Oz’s pocket a paper.
Sandy : I’m off at 9.
Oz : She’s off at 9.

In IIB’s surveillance room.
Toby : Oh, ok. This is pretty serious, he’s in chains.
Michelle : Yeah, well, he’s made four escape attempts in the last 5 years. Last time they put him in solitary, a few hours later, they found him outside the perimeter.
Toby : Ok, go ask the right questions and see what I can get.
In IIB’s interrogation room.
Michelle : So you held on that information for 6 days and then, you hold us the wrong Judge.
Magnus : Hum.. sorry about that. You have to admit though without me, you wouldn’t know anything at all. The first you would have heard about this, is when the Judge’s body turned up.
Michelle : Why don’t you tell me what the hell it is you’re up too?
Magnus : I would love to help my favorite cop, got to love the irony.
Michelle : Where is Coruthers keeping Sonnenfeld?
In the surveillance room, Toby tries to read in Magnus’ mind but doesn’t succeed.
Magnus : Could be anywhere.
Michelle : Maybe it’s all a misdirect, like a magician? Wants you to look at his right hand while the left is palming the card.
Magnus : Magician? I like that.
Michelle : Well, you have made four escape attempts.
Magnus : Five, you don’t know about my last one.
Michelle : Now, you’re out of Kingston, you’re ready for your disappearing act?
Magnus : Maybe I just wanted to get you alone in a room.
Michelle : That sounds like a threat.
Magnus : How did you catch me? You weren’t even in charge of the case.
Michelle : A lot of cops worked the Gold Corp case.
Magnus : But you’re the one that found me.
Michelle : I guess I got lucky.
Magnus : Thank you Sergeant. I find your honesty refreshing.
In IIB’s surveillance room.
Michelle : Did you get anything?
Toby : I got nothing.
At EMS’ QG.
Oz : Nothing?
Toby : Nothing, I can’t read his thoughts, way too quick.
Oz : Aren’t everybody’s thoughts quick?
Toby : No, not this quick. I mean, just picture yourself sitting beside a highway trying to listen to a conversation in a moving car, you can’t, right? He looks calm when his brain is going a million miles a minute.
Oz : Just slow it down.
Toby : Oh yeah, that’s right, I’ll just press pause and rewind and press slow mo.
Oz : Whoa, what did I do?
Toby : It’s my headache.
Oz : Well, I’ll get you some more of my mother’s turnip juice.
Toby : No, I appreciate that.
Oz : I told her how much you liked it, she’ll make you some mea. It’s no problem, really.

In IIB’s surveillance room.
Michelle : Hey.
Dev : You’d half expect him to disappear like Houdini? I still can’t believe it was you that caught him. How did you do it?
Michelle : He wrote so taunting letters to the police, I was fresh out of cadet, training and enough time to look at the syntax patterns. I tied them to an obscure doctoral thesis and we traced him through that.
Dev : Sounds like solid police work.
Michelle : It was a fluke.
Dev : He’s got a doctorate?
Michelle : Two.
At St Luke’s hospital.
Olivia : Who, what, where? What is this?
Sandy : Mr. Rimaldi in 407. I think he’s trying to extend his stay so he can see more of you.
Olivia : Oh, he’s such a sweetheart.
Sandy : Or I can tell him you’re planning on opening him up for a look see. That would cure his interest in surgeons.
Toby : Hey Liv, you got a minute?
Olivia : Hey, yeah, what’s up?
Toby : I want you to check me out.
Olivia : Why, what’s wrong?
Toby : I don’t know.
At IIB’s QG.
At Dev’s desk.
Michelle : Coruthers was supposed to meet his parole officer last week, he didn’t show. We checked his neighborhood, no one has seen him since he got out.
Dev : The Judge’s wife got a ransom demand.
Michelle : Delivered?
Dev : The courier said it was left in a drop box downtown with a hundred dollar bill taped to it. No way to find out who dropped it off.
Alvin : Alright, let’s see it.
Dev plays the video.
Alvin : What is this place?
Dev : What are those shadows?
Judge Sonnenfeld : (On the video) “Listen carefully. One million dollars. That is the cost of my life. It’s to be delivered by 9 o’clock tonight. I will you know where. Have it ready. He will be watching. No police or I die. Do as he says or he will kill me .”
At St Luke’s hospital.
Olivia is examining Toby.
Toby : It’s mainly these intense migraines.
Olivia : So when did you first notice it.
Toby : This morning.
Olivia : Would you say it’s connected to your use of telepathy?
Toby : What do you think that means?
Olivia : I’m not sure. There’s lots we don’t know about this ability of yours. It’s could be from the information input or how your brain is processing it. We’ll run some tests narrow down some possibilities. In the meantime, are you taking anything for them?
Toby : This Turkish drink that Oz gave me.
Olivia : Turkish drink?
Toby : Yeah, it worked. Thank you. Thanks Liv.
Olivia : You’re welcome.
At IIB’s QG.
Michelle : Coruthers never made it past the sixth grade; I don’t see him settling this up.
Dev : Right, or staking out the Judge, knowing his movements, his schedule. Figuring out where all the surveillance cameras were and taking them out.
Michelle : Getting a van and a place to keep him, video equipment, a computer to burn a DVD.
Alvin : Ok, what about Lex Luther here, how is he connected?
Michelle : Well, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s behind all of it.
Alvin : Ok well, are there any links between him and the kidnapped Judge?
Dev : Nothing, in fact, 6 years ago, when Magnus was arrested Sonnenfeld was still serving as a justice of the peace.
Alvin : Alright, so warrant applications, probable cause.
Dev : None of them have anything to do with Magnus. As far as I can tell, they never met, in court or otherwise.
Alvin : Ok, well he’s been in lock down since this started so he can’t be communicating with Coruthers.
Michelle : There has to be someone else involved. Someone on the outside.
Toby arrives in IIB.
Toby : Hey.
Michelle : Hey. So we’re going to take another run at Magnus.
Toby : Really?
Michelle : Yeah.
Toby : Ok, how is this going to be any different than before?
Michelle : Well, you’re going to come in with me this time. You ask the right questions and get the read and I’m going to try to slow him down.
Toby : Okay.
In IIB’s interrogation room.
Michelle : Magnus, this is Agent Logan. He’s going to help me out.
Magnus : I see.
Toby : Just want to ask you a few questions. Maybe you can help us find the Judge.
Magnus : Are you an expert in interrogation Agent Logan?
Toby : No, I’m not. No. This prisoner Coruthers, I hear he’s quite talkative. I also hear that he was not the sharpest tool in the shed, which makes me wonder how interesting his conversations must have been.
Magnus : If I were to limit my conversations to those who understand me, Agent Logan, it would be a very solitary existence indeed.
Toby : Uh, uh.
Magnus : But you’re asking the wrong questions.
Toby : Oh ok, what are the right questions?
Magnus : Why are you assuming that kidnapping the Judge was his idea?
Michelle : Maybe it was yours.
Magnus : Um, see, presumptions.
Toby : Then who?
Magnus : You have to go back into the past. Noah didn’t build the Ark when it was raining.
Michelle : Is this going to be nothing but riddles? Because I’m beginning to think that you don’t have anything at all and this was just an excuse for you to get out of prison for a day.
Magnus : Well we rarely get to spend any time together Michelle, you and I.
Michelle : Oh it’s Michelle now, is it?
Magnus : Oh, I feel I know you very well.
Michelle : Is that right?
Magnus : Uh. It must be very difficult always feeling that you don’t deserve your successes. Always waiting for everyone to find out you’re a fraud. Does this sound familiar? It’s called “Imposter Syndrome”. You tend to chalk up all your achievements to luck. Like catching me.
Michelle : Just eats you up that a little cadet brought you down, doesn’t it?
Magnus : No silly child, that you tale no pride in it.
Magnus’s thoughts.
Magnus thinks of a little girl saying no.
Magnus : It’s quite common for people that rise in their careers to quickly, especially women, Michelle.
Michelle : We’re done. You’re going back to Kingston.
Magnus : Did he make his ransom demand?
Michelle : Now why would I share that with you? But I’m sure you know, right?
Magnus : The real question is where would a Judge get that kind of money?
In IIB’s conference room.
Michelle : So what did you get?
Toby : Well, when he got annoyed he pictured you as a little girl.
Michelle : Of course he did.
Dev : You guys aren’t going to believe this. So Airport Security responded to our APB. This right there is Randy Coruthers, he’s picking up a one way ticket to Cuba, paid in cash. Brand new clothes, new bag, got on the plane and he’s out of the country.
Toby : Ok, what about the Judge?
Dev : That’s the thing. These photos were taken five days ago. Before any of this happened.
Toby : So.. he has nothing to do with this.
Dev : What do you want to bet that Magnus has paid him to disappear?
Michelle : So if it wasn’t Coruthers, then who kidnapped the Judge?
In IIB’s conference room.
Officer Dewhurst arrives with a document.
Officer Dewhurst : I’ve got the phone and visitor records for Coruthers. No visitors but we’ve got a dozen calls, all from the same number. Are you done with Magnus?
Michelle : You know Magnus pretty well, right?
Officer Dewhurst : Six years on his tier, I know him as well as anybody.
Michelle : So why do you think he came to us with this?
Officer Dewhurst : Who knows, he could have an agenda but then again, he could just be messing with you.
Michelle : Well, they say that he runs Kingston Pen.
Officer Dewhurst : There isn’t a thing that goes in or out of that prison that he doesn’t know about. He controls the back market. He’s also the prison lawyer, gives out legal advice to anyone who wants it.
Michelle : What about all the escape attempts?
Dev : No one has been able to escape out of Kingston in years.
Officer Dewhurst : If I had 50 million waiting for me, I’d want out too.
Michelle : You really think that he has that money stashed somewhere?
Officer Dewhurst : If anyone could pull it off, he could. Five hours left then I have to take him back.
In IIB’s main room.
Michelle : So the cells to Coruthers, we got a name, Gregory Harrow. He’s 15 minutes away, you interested?
Toby : Yeah, I’m in.
In squash game center.
Gregory Harrow is playing squash with another man. Michelle and Toby are waiting for him to finish.
Gregory Harrow is winning.
Gregory Harrow : Whoo!
Michelle : Gregory Harrow?
Gregory Harrow : Wait, don’t tell me, last month at Minx. Bought you vodka red bull, we did the grind on the dance floor? (Michelle shows him her badge.) Oh my bad.
Michelle : Yeah.
Gregory Harrow : (To Toby) Hey, what’s up?
Toby : Hey.
Gregory Harrow’s thoughts.
Gregory Harrow : “Not… what you think, don’t panic.”
Michelle : Can I see your phone?
Gregory Harrow : Yeah, what’s this all about?
Michelle : This looks brand new.
Gregory Harrow : Yeah, somebody stole my old one from my locker.
Michelle : We know you’ve been in touch with Randy Coruthers.
Gregory Harrow : Who?
Toby : About a Judge, Daniel Sonnenfeld?
Gregory Harrow’s thoughts.
Gregory Harrow : “It can’t be that, they can’t know the connection. They’re fishing, they don’t.”
He remembers a scene with a girl. She beats him.
Gregory Harrow : Doesn’t ring any bells, champ. Why did this guy steal my old phone?
Michelle : No, but we’ll be back with more information and you will have a better attitude.
Gregory Harrow : Can’t wait.
Toby : Got a good read, he’s lying. He knows Sonnenfeld and there’s something else very disturbing.
Michelle : What do you mean?
Toby : There’s a girl in a dorm room, she looked terrified. I think he did something to her.
At IIB’s QG.
In IIB’s conference room.
Michelle : We have four hours left and I’m clutching at straws here. Do you think I got what I did through luck?
Dev : What? Come on, no. My father always said luck is when preparation meets opportunity.
Michelle : So then I’m an opportunist.
Dev : I mean you have to be good to be lucky. You ask anybody out there including me, you’re good.
Michelle : He just has me rattled.
Dev : I checked Sonnenfeld’s bank records and over the last decade, I found periodic influxes that aren’t accounted for.
Michelle : How much?
Dev : Well, they’re all cash deposits under the reporting limit but over the years added up, it’s close to three quarters of a million.
Michelle : Ok, what about Sonnenfeld’s wife?
Dev : Well, she claims to know nothing about it. I believe her. I mean, the accounts were well hidden.
Michelle : So we have to find out who was paying him and for what. Ok, what about Harrow, do you have anything on him?
Dev : No arrest record but I did find something interesting in the papers.
Michelle : News article?
Dev : No, the society pages. His father owns Martel Industries. Young Gregory was the most eligible bachelor in the year 2007, he was the swim champion in college. Could have made the Olympic team.
Michelle : Yeah, if sleaze were an Olympic event.
Dev : Yeah.
Michelle : Is there anything else?
Dev : Just he’s used to living high off the hog, suddenly, he’s dead broke. Had a little spat with daddy, cut off his trust fund last year.
Michelle : Ok, check the University Campus records. Toby said something about a connection with a young girl.
Dev : Young girl, ok. Wish me luck.
Toby arrives while Dev leaves.
Dev : Hey.
Toby : (To Dev) Hey. (To Michelle) Hey, so we’re going in there?
Michelle : Just you, I need you to find Magnus’s link to the case.
Toby : Uh, just me and Magnus? Really?
Michelle : It’s worth the shot.
In IIB’s interrogation room.
Toby : You told us the Judge was going to be kidnapped, but it was the wrong Judge. You said that Coruthers was going to do it, but he was already out of the country. You’re winging us around, you’re not even trying to hide it.
Magnus : Right, now all I’m trying to do is figure out who you are, Mr. Logan. I know you’re not who you pretend to be.
Toby : Ok, who do you think I am?
Magnus : Your clothes aren’t high-and pro casual like the Sergeant’s, they’re not cheap enough for undercover, so I know you’re not police. Your eyes aren’t blood shot, so I know you’re not the partying type and I’d say you’ve been up for what, 20 hours? You do shift work.
Toby : You are very observant.
Magnus : You believe in evil, Mr. Logan?
Toby : Do I believe in evil?
Magnus : Yes.
Toby : I’ve seen evil.
Magnus : Have you?
Toby : Yes.
Magnus : Have you looked in the eye?
Toby : Yes, I have.
Magnus : Well then, you know the only way to cure it is to cut. To surgically excise it and destroy it.
Toby : Sounds to me like you’ on a mission for justice.
Magnus : Oh, I don’t believe in justice, per se, I believe in just desserts.
Toby : And this, did you get what you deserve?
Magnus : I was put prison for chasing money, Mr. Logan. Money means nothing to me now.
Magnus’ thoughts.
Magnus : “Just think, Coruthers, $100,000.”
Officer Dewhurst comes in the room with two other correctional agents.
Magnus : Officer Dewhurst, you’re a sight for sore eyes. I hope you’ve had a productive day.
Officer Dewhurst : Your 9 hours are up Magnus. I booked a nice cozy room for you at the Don Jail. You’re going back to Kingston in the morning. Vacation’s over.
Magnus : Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Toby : Who else knew the Judge has enough money for the ransom?
Magnus : Whoever gave it to him. Goodnight Mr. Logan, get some sleep.
Magnus leaves the room.
Toby : I think he paid Coruthers to disappear.
Michelle : Tomorrow morning he goes back to Kingston so whatever he’s planned has already happened.
Toby : Or it’s about to.
Michelle : It’s almost 6 o’clock so we have three hours until the ransom demand runs out.
Toby : Yeah, he kept on talking about revenge in there, you gotta believe that he’s got a reason to go after the Judge.
Michelle : Assuming that Judge Sonnenfeld was his only target.
In IIB’s conference room.
Michelle : What’s this?
Dev : Her name is Andrea Fry. Five years ago, she was strangled, her body left in the woods. She was student at University of Toronto around the same time as Harrow.
Toby : Guys, this is the girl I saw when I read Harrow.
Dev : I will check with Toronto Homicide.
Michelle : I think we just caught a break.
In IIB’s conference room.
Michelle is talking to a cop from Toronto Homicide, Detective Ramino.
Michelle : Detective Ramino, do you remember Andrea Fry?
Detective Ramino : Don’t forget a case like that. It was brutal, she was an orphan. Run through the system. She lands this amazing scholarship, full ticket to any school she wants. Fairy tale story, right? She ends up at U of T Business school. Rarified air, kids with silver spoons.
Michelle : And Frat houses right?
Detective Ramino : Yeah, keg parties. Girls brought in from all over campus, suddenly it’s not a fairy tale anymore. Not for Andrea. She ends up raped with a cord around her neck.
Michelle : We’re interested with a prime suspect from that case, Gregory Harrow.
Detective Ramino : The guy was just wrong all over. I knew in my bones he was the one who did Andrea.
Michelle : So why did the case go sideways?
Detective Ramino : I had to prove that she was in Harrow’s room that night, no question that’s where he killed her. All I needed was a warrant and I had the evidence to nail his ass.
Michelle : Let me guess, the Judge wouldn’t sign the warrant, right?
Detective Ramino : Son of a bitch says there’s no probable cause, can you believe that? Witness’s started shutting up, nobody there on her side, an orphan girl? It all just fell to pieces after that. Harrow skated away.
Michelle : Do you remember the name of the Judge?
Detective Ramino : Oh yeah, real piece of work, Daniel Sonnenfeld.
At Dev’s desk.
Toby : Hey Dev, would you mind printing off a few copies of this image for me?
Dev : Um, no problem.
Toby : Thank you.
At Toby’s apartment.
Toby is working on the photo Dev printed for him. He calls Dev.
Toby : What does that look like to you in the back ground?
Dev : (From IIB’s QG) Looks like a trophy.
Toby : Yeah, a swimming trophy. Harrow was a champion swimmer with a dozen trophies just like this in his college dorm room, I got it in my reading.
At IIB’s QG.
Michelle : A little over 5 years ago, Gregory Harrow was suspected of murdering a woman in college, Andrea Fry.
Alvin : Only they can’t get a search warrant for his place because Judge Sonnenfeld won’t sign.
Michelle : And then the Judge starts to receive cash every month, over the years it adds up to three quarters of a million.
Dev : Now if we can show the money leaving Harrow’s account and reappearing in the Judge’s.
Michelle : Yeah, only now he’s cut off from daddy’s funds, he’s totally broke.
Dev : So he decides to kidnap the Judge and make his own money back in ransom.
Alvin : So is the almighty Magnus behind this or not?
Michelle : I don’t know yet.
Alvin : I still don’t know how arranging the get out of jail for a day and taking a field trip to IIB figures into it. He could pull all the same strings from behind bars.
Michelle : We have about an hour until ransom demand runs out, we need to search Harrow’s apartment, his car, the locker at his gym, everything we can.
Alvin : Alright, give me a minute I will write it up and get you a warrant.
In Squash game center.
In the locker room.
Michelle : Open it.
Gregory Harrow : This is crazy.
Dev : It’s included in the warrant sir.
Michelle : Open it.
Gregory Harrow opens his locker. Michelle finds a back bag with back gloves, keys and a gun in it.
Michelle : What’s this?
Gregory Harrow : This isn’t mine. None of that is mine. I have no idea where that came from.
Michelle : Where are your trophies.
Gregory Harrow : My what?
Michelle : Your swimming trophies from college, they’re not in your apartment, where are they?
Dev : (Reading the note on the keys) B17, it’s a UStore at 601 Queensway.
Michelle : Come on.
Dev : (To Gregory Harrow) Let’s go.
At UStore.
Michelle : There.
Dev opens the door. They discover the Judge gagged and tied.
Michelle : You okay? You okay? (The Judge nods his head) Yeah?
Judge Sonnenfeld : Thank God.
At St Luke’s hospital.
Michelle : So they say other than being dehydrated, you’re going to be fine.
Judge Sonnenfeld : Feel like hell, well, thank God you found me.
Michelle : Do you think you’ll be able to identify your kidnapper?
Judge Sonnenfeld : He wore a mask the entire time, didn’t talk to me. He just wrote notes.
Michelle : Maybe because you would have recognized his voice. We know about the bride, how Harrow has been paying you off all these years. Do you remember Andrea Fry?
Judge Sonnenfeld : I don’t, no.
Michelle : Well, you were given a warrant to sign that would have put away her killer but you wouldn’t sign it. Even now, you’re still protecting him.
At Toby’s apartment.
Toby : Hey, wait, what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be on a date.
Oz : Yeah, Sandy got her shift extended. Five car pileups came in, multiple injuries, you know. Oh, I saw that Judge at the hospital.
Toby : Yeah?
Oz : You guys found him?
Toby : Yeah, he’s a bad dude.
Oz : Ha…, two bad dudes for the price of one. Justice is served.
Toby : Just desserts?
Oz : No, that’s not what I said, no.
Toby : It’s all too neat.
Oz : What’s too neat? You know I’m not mind reader, right?
Toby : The bag in the locker, the shadow of the trophy, paying the guy to go to Cuba. I know the guy did it, I just don’t know how or why.
Oz : Why, who did what, how?
Toby : Where.
Oz : Where?
Toby : Jail, I got to go to the jail.
Oz : Oh the jail, oh yeah, now it makes sense.
At Don Jail.
Toby : Hey.
Michelle : Hey. I was able to get you 10 more minutes with Magnus.
Toby : Alright, I think I have a way in there.
Toby enters in the jail while Michelle waiting in the entrance.
Magnus : Hello Mr. Logan, are you here to tell you just who you really are? Mr. Police consultant.
Toby : I’m a paramedic.
Magnus : What do you take me for?
Toby : It’s the truth, it’s what I do. Pick people up, fix them up, bring them to the hospital. Good people, bad people, doesn’t matter. It’s not that complicate, neither are you.
Magnus : Oh you’ve got me all figured out now, do you?
Toby : Yeah, I mean, you’re just like the rest of us. You’re flesh and bone, driven by emotions. Love, hate, regret, revenge.
Magnus : By now, you’ve found your Judge in peril, you’ve got your kidnappers. What are you really doing here Mr. Logan?
Toby : Well, I just want to understand you.
Magnus : With all due respect Mr. Paramedic, you don’t have the capacity.
Toby : Who’s Andrea Fry?
Magnus’ thoughts.
Magnus looks at a little girl, Andrea, before leaving her.
Toby : She was your daughter.
Magnus : No, I don’t have… who are you?
Toby : Played your hand perfectly, you got Sonnenfeld, you got Harrow. You ran the table.
Magnus : Did I?
Toby : Yeah, you did. What is it? You don’t look satisfied, what’s next?
Magnus : Your loss must have been very grave, Mr. Logan.
Toby : My loss?
Magnus : To see all this. The pain must have been overwhelming, a wife perhaps? A parent? A mother? Hum.
Toby : Well, we all experience grief and we all deal with it differently.
Magnus : Seems I have underestimated you Mr. Logan, perhaps you underestimated me too. Good luck with your grief.
In Don Jail entrance.
Gregory is here with Officer Dewhurst who is about to take him to his cell. Michelle is still waiting for Toby.
Officer Dewhurst : You can take him in.
Admission employee : You don’t mind?
Officer Dewhurst : Not a problem.
Toby arrives.
Toby : Andrea Fry is Magnus’s daughter.
Michelle : What? There was no record of having any kids.
Toby : When he couldn’t escape from prison he came up with this plan to get revenge on his daughter’s murderer and disgrace the Judge who protected him.
In Magnus’ cell.
Gregory Harrow : So what are you in for?
Magnus : Oh, I have many sins to account for. Pride, greed. I’m actually thinking about having one more.
Gregory Harrow : Yeah what’s that?
Magnus : Wrath.
In Don jail entrance.
Officer Dewhurst comes back from Magnus’ cell.
Officer Dewhurst’s thoughts.
Officer Dewhurst : “Stay cool, they don’t suspect a thing. $10,000,000.”
He places the black gloves and other evidences in Gregory Harrow’s locker.
Toby : You’re the outside man.
Officer Dewhurst : What?
Michelle : Toby, are you sure about this?
Toby : Magnus paid Dewhurst, he’s helping him. He couldn’t escape so he did the next best thing. He brought Harrow to him with Dewhurst’s help.
Michelle : Into the same damn cell. Ok, keep him here. I need you to buzz us in now. Come on.
In Magnus’ cell.
Michelle : Magnus let him go! Let him go! Let him go!
Magnus : He’s mine. Our appointment with destiny has merely been delayed.
At St Luke’s hospital.
Toby : Hey.
Olivia : Hey.
Toby : I had 10 hours of sleep and I feel great.
Olivia : Hm, what about the headaches?
Toby : They come and go but the over the counter stuff, works perfectly.
Olivia : Well, we could still run those tests.
Toby : No, I’m good. I’ve stopped drinking the Turkish drink.
Olivia : I wish I could say this is just an outlier event but I’m still concerned.
Toby : Liv, it’s nice that you care about me, it’s nice having someone worry about me.
Olivia : I’m just saying you’ve got to take care of yourself.
Toby : Alright.
Olivia : Okay.
Toby : Thank you.
Olivia : Your welcome.
In the street.
In front of a snack car.
Michelle : So when Harrow’s convicted they are going to have to keep them as far away from Magnus as possible.
Toby : You really think that’s going to keep him safe?
Michelle : I doubt it but you have to admit Magnus almost got away with it.
Toby : It was pretty close but you’ve stopped him twice now.
Michelle : With a little help.
Toby : Oh, we all need a little that doesn’t make your accomplishment any less.
Michelle : You have to be good to be lucky, right?
Toby : You have to be good to know what to do with the luck.
Michelle : Well, it’s nice to just take a moment, don’t you think?
Toby : Yes, what do you want?
Michelle : What’s good, you said you were just here.
Toby : Ah, I hear the milkshake is full of surprises.
Michelle : Two chocolate milkshakes please? You buying?
Toby : I am.
Michelle : Thank you, Toby Logan.
Toby : (To the waitress) Thank you.
